Pierrick Naud, Leah Kirchmann win Redlands crits

Pierrick Naud (Garneau-Quebecor) won the men’s criterium at the Redlands Bicycle Classic on Saturday.

An eight-man break boiled down to five by the end of the 90-minute race. SmartStop managed the gap for race leader Travis McCabe, and as the lap counter ticked down it became clear the break would not be caught.

On the final lap, Fred Rodriguez (Jelly Belly-Maxxis) led the bunch within sight of the break, which split yet again, leaving three riders to contend for the stage win. And Naud proved fastest at the line, beating Bobby Lea (SoCalCycling.com) and Eloy Teruel (Jamis-Hagens Berman).

McCabe leads the overall by eight seconds over Optum’s Tom Zirbel, whose teammate William Routley sits third at nine seconds.

Earlier, race leader Leah Kirchmann (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies) won the women’s crit.

Three UnitedHealthcare riders were on the front going into bell lap in stage 4, with Optum massing just behind.

Optum came forward during the lap, and the race leader led out the sprint, holding her edge to the line, with Alison Powers (UnitedHealthcare) second and Sara Headley (Team Tibco) third.

Kirchmann now leads Powers by 10 seconds on GC with Lauren Stephens (Tibco) third at 27 seconds.
