MADRID (AFP) — Michal Kwiatkowski won the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana Tuesday, on day three of the Mallorca Challenge. Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) attacked solo to take victory in the 152-kilometer race on the Mediterranean island.
The 23-year-old, who finished 11th overall in the 2013 Tour de France, attacked on the final climb of the day, the Col de Puig Major, to join the leading group. He then parted company with the six-man group with 6km to go and rallied to the line, 27 seconds ahead of Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky). Francesco Gavazzi (Astana) was third, on the same time as Boasson Hagen.
“I am really happy because my victory repaid the hard efforts of the teams in the first two races,” Kwiatkowski said in a press release. “We didn’t win, but we were always in the front and fighting.”
The final day of the Mallorca Challenge comes Wednesday with the 162km Trofeo Muro-Port D’Alcudia.
