World Cup leader Katie Compton and world champion Sven Nys delivered victories for Trek at the G.P. Sven Nys in Baal, Belgium, on Wednesday.
Compton (Trek Cyclocross Collective) topped world champion Marianne Vos (Rabobank) in the women’s race. Nikki Harris (Telenet-Fidea) was third in the Bpost Bank Trofee series stop.
Vos lost contact with her American rival late in the race when she was forced to pit.
“It was unfortunate timing for Marianne,” said Compton. “I thought it was a good race, I think we were definitely pushing each other throughout the whole thing. When I heard she had to go pit for a mechanical I just pushed hard that last lap and just tried to be smooth and rode some faster lines I think, and just was able to hold the gap to the end.”
In the men’s race, Nys finished his first contest with his new Crelan-AA Drink team as victor. Zdenek Stybar (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) was second and Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) was third.
For Nys, the win came on his first day aboard a Trek bike, in Crelan-AA Drink colors — a move he called stressful after the finish.
“Not only did I take the victory, but we had the new bike and the stress that everybody wants to win here on the first day of the year,” he said. “New sponsors. It’s a lot of stress, and I’m happy that it’s over.”
