Elle Anderson third as Sanne Cant wins Superprestige Diegem

American Elle Anderson (California Giant-Specialized) rode to a podium finish on Sunday as Sanne Cant (Enertherm-BKCP) collected her ninth victory of the season in the Superprestige round at Diegem.

Eva Lechner (Colnago Suditrol) finished second at eight seconds down with Anderson third at 10 seconds.

Ellen Van Loy (DNCS-Pro 2012) got off to a fast start with Lechner, Cant and Anderson in her wake. Lechner took over, and Cant and Anderson followed, while Van Loy found the pace a bit too high.

In the final lap Cant made her move, leaving Lechner and Anderson to find the lower steps on the podium.

Cant said she had been suffering from a sore throat and tried “not to go too deep today.”

“I just had to wait until the moment they sat down to use my final attack again,” she said.

Anderson was delighted with her podium finish.

“It’s definitely an exciting day for me. I’m having a really fun time over here in Europe and I’ve been waiting for a good race and I’m really glad I had good legs for this one,” she said.

“I was lucky enough today to have a good start. I had really good position going into the holeshot and that first section, which today was very important because a lot of the deep mud sections that were very technical were in that first quarter of the lap. So having a good position going into that section was key.

“I was able to stay in a lead group of four that eventually because three, but again, I think it was the positioning in the front that really helped me today.”

It was a good day for Americans, with Crystal Anthony (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies) finishing fifth at 1:41, Courtney McFadden (Bicycle Blue Book-Rock Lobster) eighth at 1:55 and Maureen Bruno Roy (Bob’s Red Mill-Seven Cycles) 10th at 2:17.

Nicole Duke (Marin-Spy) just missed a top-10 finish, crossing 11th at 2:48.
