Nikolas Maes takes World Ports Classic

Nikolas Maes (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) won the World Ports Classic on Saturday.

Maarten Tjallingii (Belkin) won the second and final stage, a 191km leg from Rotterdam to Antwerp, jumping away from a breakaway of 16 riders less than 20 km from the finish and holding on for the victory.

Frederique Robert (Lotto Belisol) took second in the bunch sprint, while Maes finished third.

That was enough to give Maes the overall title ahead of Jonathan Cantwell (Saxo-Tinkoff) and Reinier Honig (Crelan-Euphony).

“I did a long sprint and Frederique Robert just passed me at the finish line. When this happened I was afraid I didn’t win the race, but after the finish someone on the team told me Robert was far behind the day before, and so I was the winner,” said Maes.

“I am really happy and I have to thank the team. They rode like hell today.”
