Zach Bell (Champion System) sprinted to the men’s road race title at the Canadian National Championships on Saturday in St. Georges, Quebec.
Christian Meier (Orica-GreenEdge) got the early move going and tried to seal the deal with a late solo move. But a chase of six ran him down with 3km to go, and Bell proved fastest of them, taking the victory ahead of Ryan Anderson (Optum-Kelly Benefit Systems) and Antoine Duchesne (Bontrager Cycling).
“Once the selection was made early, I knew it was my race to lose,” said Bell. “When Christian broke away, I did some megapulls to bring him back. I wasn’t gonna try to bluff my way into it. You don’t win these things by making everybody else work for it, you gotta do it yourself.”
Duchesne took the U23 title for the second consecutive year, ahead of Pierrick Naud (Garneau-Quebecor) and Stuart Wight (Team New Brunswick).
