How to fit training for race season into your life

Spring is in the air and race season is just around the corner. With a calendar full of events, the inevitable questions are likely floating through your head.

Where and how do I begin preparing? How in the world am I going to juggle racing with work and family commitments without getting fired or, even worse, becoming an outcast from the family?

Take a deep breath. You’re not the first athlete to encounter this issue and you will not be the last. Here are some ways to make sure you fit your training into your life when cycling is not your day job.

Routine will set you free

The trick to all this — and the foundation of your training — should first be to find a routine. Whether you prefer training in the early hours or later in the day, determine what works best for you and stick to it. Pick a day of the weekend that is dedicated to your long rides and plan around this set time frame.

Setting a routine takes some discipline at first, so this is where it helps to have a well-defined goal. Goals guide habits primarily by providing the initial outcome-oriented impetus for response repetition. In this sense, habits often are a remnant of past goal pursuit.
