Rui Costa (Movistar), a pre-race favorite for the overa.l podium, crashed out of Paris-Nice on Monday, suffering a wrist injury that saw him transported to an area hospital.
The Movistar team confirmed via Twitter that the Portuguese rider had “been transfered to the Centre Hospitalier de Fontainebleau to evaluate possible fractures in his left wrist.”
Costa crashed with 65km to go in stage 1.
Costa announced on Twitter later Monday that he had not suffered any fractures, just cuts and scrapes.
“The Portuguese rider, who initially attempted to get back to the group with pain and bruises all over his body, was eventually moved to a medical center in Fontainebleau, where the medical checks ruled out any fractures in his left hand — a broken wrist was feared — having received several stitches on the crash’s site,” the Movistar team said in a press release. “Costa was back in the hotel with his teammates at around 6:00 p.m. today and will return to Portugal in the next few hours.”
