Powers, Anderson win New Year’s Resolution in Illinois

Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus) won a snowy men’s elite race at the Chicago Cross Cup’s New Year’s Resolution on Saturday.

Powers battled much of the group with Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com teammates Jamey Driscoll and Tim Johnson, and Yannick Eckmann (Cal Giant-Specialized), but the U.S. champion was able to pull away late in his last race before the 2013 nationals. Driscoll edged out Eckmann for second after the trio dropped Johnson on the final lap.

Powers came back from a late bike change that saw him lose contact with the front of the race.

“At a certain point, you just say I’m going to race as hard as I can go now, and forget the rest of it,” he said. “Europe, where we just went 10 days ago, was a tough trip for us. We trained a little bit too much, so now we’re tapering a little early for nationals and we’ll keep our fingers crossed.”

Elle Anderson (LadiesFirst) won the women’s race earlier in the day over Amanda Carey (Volkswagen Boise) and Mackenzie Woodring (Einstein).

“It’s the first time I’ve ever raced a bike in snow,” said Anderson, “but I’m a former ski racer so snow is familiar for me and I’m used to that slippery feeling. It took me a little time to adjust but after that, it was pretty fun.”
