Sanne Cant out-kicks Nikki Harris on muddy Loenhout course

LOENHOUT, Belgium (VN) — Sanne Cant (Enertherm-BKCP) won the Azencross at Loenhout on Friday, taking a two-up sprint with Nikki Harris (Telenet-Fidea).

Katerina Nash (Luna) rounded out the podium in third.

Harris led out the sprint, but Cant came around her in the finale to claim the victory.

“I deliberately waited a long time because there was a head wind,” said Cant. “Nikki was better than I was today, but tactically I have played better.”

U.S. champion Katie Compton (Trek Cyclocross Collective) crashed at least twice on the day, once on the final lap after some contact with Harris, and had to settle for fourth, one place better than world champion Marianne Vos (Rabobank), who fell in the first lap.

Cant leads the Bpost series with 69 points. Harris sits second with 63 and Helen Wyman (Kona Factory Racing) is third with 62.

Whether she can win the series remains to be seen, however. Cant called the next race in the series, the GP Sven Nys on January 1 in Baal, particularly crucial to overall success.

“Much will depend, I think, on Baal,” she said. “At Lille and Oostmalle you can limit the damage, even on a bad day. But if you have bad legs in Baal, then you have a serious serious problem and you can lose a lot.”
