Froome expects to lead at the Tour — The Times
In an exclusive interview, Chris Froome tells The Times’ Matt Dickinson that he expects to lead Sky at the Tour de France in 2013. Reigning Tour champ Bradley Wiggins sparked controversy last week when he told the BBC that he was considering going back on his plan to focus on the Giro d’Italia and thought that he would target a second Tour.
“The team are saying they are going to back me with the Tour this year,” said Froome. “That’s directly from (Sky principal) Dave (Brailsford). He said: ‘You’re our man for the Tour. Focus on it.’”
Arise Sir Wiggins — The Telegraph
The Telegraph reports on Tuesday that Bradley Wiggins will be among a number of British athletes set for knighthood. According to the report, Sky principal Dave Brailsford and paracyclist Sarah Storey will join the 2012 Tour champ on the list for recommended knights and dames, which will be published on December 29.
“The question of how to recognize the sporting stars of 2012 has been complicated by the sheer volume of remarkable performances registered in the London Olympic and Paralympic Games,” writes Paul Kelso. “The usual ‘quota system’ for honors, which limited sport to a single knight or dame in any year, has proved inadequate to deal with the volume of medalists from an unprecedented year of achievement.
“British Olympians won 29 gold medals out of a total of 65 medals, with 35 Paralympic golds out of 120 won in the second half of London’s remarkable sporting summer.”
