The UCI on Wednesday morning announced the 12 ProTeams in line for a WorldTour license for 2013.
Twelve squads with WorldTour licenses extending through 2013 had submitted registration documents as of October 1. The UCI requires potential ProTeams to submit budget documentation, primary sponsorship contracts, bank guarantees for rider and staff salaries, a minimum of ten signed rider contracts and, for new applicants such as Argos-Shimano, a description of the team management structure and proof of existence of a team financier.
Five current ProTeams, plus Pro Continental squad Argos-Shimano, whose German sprinter John Degenkolb racked up five wins at the Vuelta a España, are vying for for WorldTour licenses for 2013. The limit of 18 ProTeams means that one of the six remaining teams will not receive a WorldTour license.
Lotto-Belisol did not appear on the UCI’s roster. The team issued a statement on Wednesday blaming an administrative error for its absence.
“Lotto-Belisol has handed in the file at the UCI, but due to an administrative mistake one document wasn’t part of the file. The UCI knows this, the document will be provided this week, so next season Lotto Belisol can be active on the highest level,” read the brief statement.
The UCI has also confirmed the 15 Professional Continental teams with licenses for 2013. Pro Continental teams must meet similar requirements to those of the ProTeams.
All applicants for Pro Continental and WorldTour licenses are required to submit registration documents by November 1.
Pro Continental squads Spidertech-C10 and Team Type 1 are not listed under the Pro Continental licensees. When contacted by VeloNews recently, Team Type 1 management refused to comment, but the team is believed to be reorganizing with an increased focus on athletes living with diabetes.
VeloNews understands that Steve Bauer’s Canadian Spidertech team plans to file its paperwork before the November 1 deadline and is finalizing sponsor and rider contracts at present.
