Arndt wins world time trial title

Germany’s Judith Arndt defended her world time trial title Tuesday in Valkenburg, Netherlands, topping American Evelyn Stevens in the 24.3km test against the clock.

Arndt registered a time of 32:26, 33 seconds faster than Stevens, who won silver.

Linda Villumsen (New Zealand) was third, at 40 seconds. Great Britain’s Emma Pooley was fourth, at 49 seconds.

Arndt, 36, recently announced that she would retire at season’s end. She has won three elite world titles, including her 2004 road race victory and her 2011 TT win, and said Tuesday that she would still close the door on her career, despite leaving the rainbow skinsuit on the table.

“I’m very proud I was able to defend my title but that won’t change my mind. After this year I’m done,” she said. “I’m relieved that my career is over, I’ve had enough.”

Stevens, in her third year as a full-time professional, logged her best worlds results to date.

“For me, it’s nice to see how far I’ve come. It’s also great for the people who’ve supported me along the way,” she told VeloNews. “It’s great to make leaps and bounds, and have the big race on the big day.”
