Schurter redeems Olympic silver with world championship

After disappointment over his Olympic silver, 2009 world champion and 2012 World Cup champion Nino Schurter won the men’s elite world championships.

The Flückiger brothers, Lucas and Mathias, completed the Swiss podium sweep Saturday in second and third, respectively.

Olympic bronze medalist Marco Fontana of Italy held Schurter’s wheel early in the race, along with the unlikely Swiss rider Fabian Giger, who turned heads with his fourth-place performance.

Giger held on for fifth place when the Flückiger brothers passed him, but Fontana dropped off the pace and Julien Absalon took fourth.

The reigning Olympic and former world champion Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic finished four minutes down, in 13th.

South African Burry Stander finished eighth.

Canadian Geoff Kabush was the highest-placing North American, in 18th, followed by Derek Zandstra. Todd Wells had the best result of the U.S. team, in 35th place.
