Olympics explained: 2012 World Cup podiums

To get a sense of who your favorites are for the Olympic medals, you need to know who sees a lot of major podiums. With a few exceptions, the names have been the same throughout the season, even if the order changes.

With five podiums, World Cup winner Nino Schurter’s name stands out from the rest as the man to beat. Two-time gold medalist Julien Absalon, Burry Stander, Marco Fontana and Jaroslav Kulhavy have also stood on podiums frequently this year and will be strong contenders for the Olympic medals.

The women’s World Cup podium has been shuffling quite a bit throughout the season.

In addition to the familiar face of World Cup winner Catharine Pendrel, North Americans Emily Batty and Georgia Gould have posted podium results this season, making a North American medal look promising.

2004 gold medalist, Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa is certainly a strong medal contender with two World Cup wins this season. Katerina Nash and Julie Bresset have been up there on a regular basis, as well.

Maja Wloszczowska’s absence from the Olympics due to injury will be felt in the competition.
