Joe Dombrowski wins 2012 Girobio

ASIAGO, Italy (VN) — After seizing the Girobio’s pink jersey on Saturday’s Passo Gavia stage, Joe Dombroski defended it on Sunday, claiming the final victory in Asiago.

Mattia Pozzo (Viris Maserati) won the finale, a 123km circuit race run on a rolling 12.3km circuit in Asiago, ahead of Marco Benfatto (Team Idea 2010 ASD) and Antonino Puccio (Hoppla’-Vega-Truck Itali).

But Bontrager-Livestrong’s Dombrowski, racing for the U.S. national team in Italy, finished comfortably in the field, crossing 35th in the same time as the winner, to confirm his overall title in the so-called Baby Giro.

“It’s great to win,” Dombrowski said. “Our race had a lot of ups and downs. We took the jersey after the fourth stage, but an untimely flat cost us the jersey. If I had any chance of getting the jersey back, I had to do it at Passo di Gavia (the eighth stage). Today, we just played it safe and came out on top.”

Fabio Aru (Team Palazzago) held onto second overall at 25 seconds back, with Pierre Paolo Penasa (Zalf Euromobil Desiree) third at 1:10.
