TDU Video with Mark Renshaw: A year of discovery

ADELAIDE, Australia (VN) – This year, newly-signed Rabobank recruit Mark Renshaw boldly sets sail on a voyage of discovery. His quest: to find out whether he can become one of the world’s best sprinters.

While he accepts his previous leader, Mark Cavendish, is still “the fastest in a straight line” and will be ridiculously hard to beat, he tells VeloNews that not only is everyone vulnerable, the Manxman can be beaten through superior positioning. “We’ve seen at the Tour that [wins] come down to positioning, and hopefully more sprinters like myself can get the chance to beat him,” said the rider from New South Wales.

In this in-depth interview from the Santos Tour Down Under, Renshaw also discusses his lead-out train, the levelling of the playing field between the top sprinters, his exclusion from the Australian team at last year’s road world championships in Copenhagen and future repercussions as a result of what he believes is a conflict of interest, and whether Eddy Merckx’s “95 percent clean” optimism is justified.

Realizing life in advertising was nothing like Mad Men and buoyed by the Olympic Games in his Australian hometown of Sydney, Anthony Tan turned his back on a lucrative copywriting career in 2000 in pursuit of something more cerebral. Combining wordsmithing with his experiences as an A-Grade club racer and an underwhelming season competing in Europe, a career as a cycling scribe beckoned… More than a dozen Grand Tours and countless Classics later, it’s where he still is today. He has been a contributor to VeloNews since 2006. In 2010, he won Cycling Australia’s media award for best story. Follow him on Twitter: @anthony_tan
