Di Luca poised to join Acqua e Sapone

Tainted Italian star Danilo Di Luca is poised to join Acqua e Sapone next season.

That’s according to a report on the Spanish website biciciclismo.com, which quoted Di Luca from a bike show in Japan.

“I will be with Acqua e Sapone, with whom I will sign a contract as soon as I get back to Italy,” Di Luca was quoted. “The Giro, the Italian and Belgian classics (will be the goals) if we’re invited.”

The 35-year-old was flat in his comeback season this year with Katusha after serving a two-year ban for testing positive for CERA-EPO during the 2009 Giro, a sanction that was reduced to nine months and seven days after “The Killer” cooperated with investigators from CONI about his doping activities.

Di Luca went winless with the Russian outfit, which did not extend his contract. He scored a handful of top-10 results, but was nowhere near his previous level.

Di Luca will join 2000 Giro winner Stefano Garzelli on the pro-continental squad. Other new recruits for 2012 include Francesco Ginanni (Androni) and Francesco Reda (Quick Step).
