UPDATED: GreenEdge, Lotto among WorldTour candidates for 2012

Eight teams, including two rookie squads, are applying for UCI WorldTour licenses for 2012. With 18 available places at the sport’s top level, and just 10 continuing licenses, the eight applicants can each qualify for the WorldTour.

Upstart GreenEdge and Marc Sergeant’s Lotto Cycling Project — split from Omega Pharma in a reshuffling of Belgian sponsors — are the two new squads vying for the WorldTour. Current ProTeams pursuing license renewals are Katusha, Omega Pharma-Quick Step and Saxo Bank-SunGard.

U.S.-registered Garmin-Cervelo was not listed. A team representative said there was no significant problem with its registration, just “some technical issues regarding the 2012 team name.” The representative said the issues were resolved later Wednesday.

Pro Continental squads FDJ, Project 1T4I (currently Skil-Shimano) and Europcar are seeking an upgrade.

The teams listed as WorldTour applicants by the UCI Wednesday fulfilled the requirements by the federation by October 1 to submit a budget, signed sponsorship contracts, a bank guarantee, at least 10 signed contracts and for new teams, a description of the organization structure and a deed of incorporation for the paying agent.

In a statement, the UCI said that, “Teams wishing to be registered in first or second division for the 2012 season are required to submit a registration file to the International Cycling Union. The UCI, in association with Ernst & Young, evaluates whether the teams are in compliance with the regulatory requirements, particularly in terms of their administration and finances.”

Continuing WorldTour squads are: Ag2R La Mondiale, Astana, BMC Racing, Euskaltel-Euskadi, Lampre-ISD, Liquigas-Cannondale, Rabobank, RadioShack-Nissan, Sky, Vacansoleil-DCM.

Pro Continental teams for 2012 include: Accent Jobs, Androni Giocattoli, Bertagne-Schuller, Caja Rural, Cofidis le credit en ligne, Conago-CSF Inox, Farnese Vini, Landbouwkrediet, Saur-Sojasun, Spidertech-C10, NetApp, Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator and American squads Team Type 1-Sanofi and UnitedHealthcare.
