Sastre loses time on stage 3 after crash and mechanical

GENOA, Italy (VN) – Carlos Sastre ceded 1:14 during Monday’s tragic third stage at the Giro d’Italia after crashing and breaking the pedals on his bike.

The 2008 Tour de France champion lost 53 seconds against the top GC favorites as a result of the mishap. WIth his bike in no condition to ride, Sastre swapped out with teammate Mauricio Ardila.
Because the frame was so much smaller than Sastre’s normal ride, he could not properly sit in the saddle and was forced to ride the closing kilometers standing in the saddle. Sastre slotted into 106th overall at 1:55 off the pace.

“In the last part of the stage, with about 10km to go, my teammate Ardila gave me his bike and it was enough to finish the stage and finish losing as little as possible,” Sastre said. “Because his bike is much smaller than mine, I had to ride the final six kilometers barely sitting in the saddle. I had to push as hard as could in order to limit the losses.”

Geox-TMC teammate Denis Menchov made it safely through with the leaders, but is 1:02 back after Geox-TMC struggled through the team time trial.
