Xavier Tondo wins 2011 Castilla y León as Ben Swift takes final stage

Ben Swift (Sky) took a bunch sprint as Xavier Tondo (Movistar) secured overall victory in the final stage at the Vuelta a Castilla y León in northern Spain.

A nine-man breakaway nearly held off the sprinters in the 167.7km run from Madrigal de las Altas Torres to Medina del Campo, only being reeled in with less than 3km to go. Swift made easy work of two-stage winner Fran Ventoso (Movistar), with Ruben Pérez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) crossing the line third.

Tondo, 32, finished safely in the bunch to wrap up the overall crown. There were no major shake-ups in the GC, with Bauke Mollema (Rabobank) settling into second at nine seconds back and Igor Antón (Euskaltel-Euskadi) rounding out the podium in third at 17 seconds off the pace.

Tondo took the lead in Saturday’s individual time trial, when he finished third at just three seconds behind stage-winner Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Sungard). Contador, however, lost nearly three minutes Friday when he punctured with less than 2km to go in the summit finish at Laguna de los Peces, opening the door for Tondo’s first major stage race victory in Spain.
