The Omega Pharma-Lotto team announced Thursday that it had fired Matthew Lloyd for “recent incidents during the first races disputed in 2011.”
The team emphasized that Lloyd’s dismissal is unrelated to doping, but did not specify the incidents that led to his getting fired.
“Our team’s image cannot be connected to Matthew’s behavior any more, therefore the unanimous decision taken by the BCC board of directors. We follow a policy of zero tolerance of which we cannot divert,” a team statement said.
The 27 year old Australian won the mountains competitition at the 2010 Gio d’Italia. He was in 112th place after stage 5 of the Tour of the Basque Country last week, but did not start the final stage time trial on Saturday. He also did not start the Tour of Catalunya, despite being on the team’s start list.
