Quick Look: prototype Mavic M40 carbon tubulars

Mavic has been testing prototypes of a new 40mm carbon tubular under a few of their high-profile riders this spring.

The wheels were spotted under Garmin-Cervélo’s Thor Hushovd and Roger Hammond in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, as well as Omega Pharma Lotto’s Phillipe Gilbert, who rode them to victory at Strade Bianche, and Jurgen Roelandts, who rode them to a podium spot at E3 Harelbeke.

The wheels are being referred to as the M40, and the versions seen thus far are built with 24 steel spokes to a lower-flange hub than most of Mavic’s current offerings. The M40 uses wide rims, following a trend started a few years ago, and are likely aimed to compete with the 45mm deep Zipp 303 and 46mm Hed Stinger 4.

Hushovd and the rest of his Garmin-Cervèlo squad are set to give them the ultimate test at Paris-Roubaix, which is also where the wheels will be officially released.
