In a move that refutes the perception that downhillers can’t pedal a bike further than to a lift line, DH world champion Tracy Moseley is set to compete in the Cape Epic stage race in South Africa.

Moseley, who won the rainbow jersey in 2010 and rides for Trek World Racing, will team up with Cape Epic veteran Anka Martin in the eight-day, 500-mile Cape Epic from March 27 to April 3, according to capeepicchallenge.blogspot.com.

Moseley, a Brit, and Martin, a South African competing in her third straight Cape Epic, will be riding to raise money and awareness for World Bicycle Relief.

“Both myself and Anka are really doing this as a great challenge and do not expect to be up there winning anything, so we decided to give ourselves the extra motivation to make sure we complete it by riding for a charity,” Moseley said.

She added that since Martin is from South Africa and that the race is in South Africa and the fact that both have made bikes their lives, the two women decided to race for a charity World Bicycle Relief.

“I think having been an athlete for so long with my major goal being to win the World Champs, when it finally happened I had this thought of ‘now what ?!’ I didn’t have a new goal,” said Moseley in her blog for British Cycling. “So within a few hours of winning I agreed to take part in the Cape Epic… For me…, it will be an all new experience consisting of eight days, 707km off road in the heat of the South African summer; I think it will be a worthy challenge.”
