Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Cervélo) won Sunday’s Trofeo Palma, the first round in the five-day 2011 Mallorca Challenge, but it appears that the UCI may refuse to recognize the legitimacy of the event after riders refused to compete without radio earpieces as per the governing body’s edict.

A seven-man break containing Oleg Chuzdha (Caja Rural) and Javier Ramirez Abeja (Andalucía-Caja Granada) went away in the early stages of the pan-flat, 116km opener in Palma de Mallorca and stayed clear until the penultimate lap.

Their retrieval set up a bunch sprint that saw Farrar take an authoritative victory ahead of Marcel Kittel (Skil-Shimano) and Francisco Ventoso (Movistar Team). But after a 20-minute rider protest over the radio ban that saw a defiant field start with earpieces, organizers said the UCI withdrew its judges and thus the race would be considered unofficial.

The UCI has yet to comment.
