U.S. Team Wins TransAndes Stage 1

Continuing on the momentum of winning La Ruta de los Conquistadores last November in Costa Rica, Benjamin Sonntag’s duo team won stage one of the TransAndes Challenge on Monday.

The overall category winners were Sonntag and his Team Jamis teammate Jason Sager. The duo completed the 61 kilometers stage with a time of 3 hours, 12 minutes and 44 seconds. Second place was for the team of Chilean Javier Püschel and Swiss Simon Zahnd, with a time of 3:17:08 seconds.

The Mixed Open category was won by Mary McConnegloug and Michael Broderick of Team Kenda-Seven. The husband-wife duo stopped the clock at 3:24:22.

Another Team Jamis rider, Blake Harlan, was the first solo rider across the line at 3:24:41. Also racing in the solo division was Canadian Andreas Hestler, who finished in 3:45:55. The women’s duo of Eva Lechner and Nathalie Schneitter, World Cup cross-country racers, posted a time of 4:33:17.

Some 130 racers are taking on the 450km Challenge. Tuesday’s second stage is 80km connecting the Huilo Huilo Reserve with Coñaripe Thermal Complex.
