Jéremy Roy wins 2011 GP La Marseillaise

Jéremy Roy (FDJ) rode away with the GP La Marseillaise on Sunday in France to win the first one-day race of the 2011 European racing calendar.

Roy was part of a three-man breakaway that formed early in the 139.8km route starting and finishing in Marseille. Joining him were Sylvain Georges (Big Mat) and Julien Guay (Roubaix-Lille). Guay ceded to the chasing pack, but Roy dropped Georges to win in 3 hours, 30 minutes, 55 seconds.

Georges came across 2:38 back and Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil) led the main across the line at 5 minutes in arrears.

Kiel Reijnen (Team Type 1) was the top American, finishing 36th at 3:10.

Roy also takes the lead in the season-long French Cup series. The 15-round series continues March 20 with the Cholet-Pays de Loire.
