Sally Annis and Dylan McNicholas won round 3 of the Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series Presented by Cycle-Smart on Saturday.
Day 1 of the Downeast Cyclocross in New Gloucester, Maine, served up a stark contrast from last year’s mud and rain. Competitors were greeted by crisp autumn air and a technical course suited to riders with strong handling skills and sharp accelerations.
In the elite women’s race, Crossresults.com’s Annis picked up her second series win by dropping teammate Sara Bresnick-Zocchi on the last lap after the two built an insurmountable gap over Ladies First’s Crystal Anthony.
Anthony came within 10 seconds of the leaders following a bad start and crash, but never got any closer. Teammate Andrea Smith finished fourth to keep her series leader’s jersey.
Mechanicals and crashes were the order of the day in the elite men’s race. From the gun a group formed with McNicholas (Pedro’s), Adam Myerson (Cycle-Smart), Nick Keough (Champion System p/b Keough Cyclocross) and Christian Favata (Favata’s Tablerock Tours and Bikes).
As the pace picked up, Favata fell off just a little, leaving McNicholas, Keough and Myerson at the front. McNicholas attacked the group on one of the short, flat straightaways and Myerson was unable to follow due to slow leaks in his tires, narrowing the front group to two.
As the race went on, McNicholas dictated the pace and eventually pushed Keough to the brink. Once Keough was off his wheel, McNicholas never looked back, stretching his lead to nearly 20 seconds and taking his first UCI victory.
Pre-race favorite Justin Lindine (Bikereg.com-Joe’s Garage-Scott) suffered a crash and mechanical early on and was forced to fight his way back to the front. He rode straight through the field and into the lead chase group, then immediately shot to the front.
Lindine’s torrid pace cost him some technique, though — he was forced to put a foot down several times and the bobbles kept him from getting any closer than 10 seconds to McNicholas. He crossed the line second with Favata third.
The Verge series continues Sunday with day 2 of the Downeast Cyclocross in New Gloucester.
