Nick Nuyens to Saxo Bank

Nick Nuyens is hoping that Bjarne Riis’s magic touch will work wonders on his moribund career with a switch to Saxo Bank in a two-year deal.

The Belgian classics specialist, who has won such races as Het Volk and finished second in the Tour of Flanders, has struggled in two seasons with Rabobank. He confirmed to the Belgian media he is joining Saxo Bank next season.

“I like the philosophy of the team. I spoke with Fabian (Cancellara) and he convinced me it was the right choice,” Nuyens told the Gazet van Antwerpen. “I could have gone back to Quick Step, but they only offered me two years. And Cofidis had an offer, but the French way is not for me. Saxo Bank is excited about me joining the team.”

Riis has made a reputation of turning around the fortunes of struggling riders. Bobby Julich and Stuart O’Grady are just two names of riders who reached new heights after joining Bjarne’s Army.

Riis will need Nuyens to be at his best following the departure of Cancellara, Matti Breschel, Jens Voigt and the Schleck brothers that leave Saxo Bank with a big hole to fill for its classics program.
