Ezequiel Mosquera signs with Vacansoleil for 2011

Just days off winning a stage and finishing second overall in the Vuelta a España, Spain’s Ezequiel Mosquera has signed a two-year deal to join Dutch-based Vacansoleil.

Mosquera, 35 in November, notched a career-best Vuelta, finally winning a stage and scoring a spot on the podium after coming close the past three seasons.

“I wanted to join a big team, where everyone could have an opportunity. The team impressed me in the 2009 Vuelta, so it was an easy decision to make,” Mosquera said. “I am anxious to begin working with my new team and share my experience with the younger riders. It’s true that Spanish races are very important for me, but I want to see how far I can go in other European races.”

Mosquera’s arrival will help Vacansoleil earn a return trip to the Vuelta next season. The Dutch team raced the Spanish tour in 2009, but was not invited for a return trip this year. Vacansoleil is also trying to earn a ProTour license and hopes that the veteran Spaniard will give them some extra clout.

Joining Mosquera will be Riccardo Riccò, Borut Bozic and Bjorn Leukemans. Vacansoleil did not earn berths in any of the grand tours in 2010.
