Kersten, Cliff-Ryan net Somerville wins

Ben Kersten (Fly V Australia) and Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Colavita-Baci) stamped their names on one of America’s oldest cycling races Monday, taking wins at the Tour of Somerville in New Jersey. The National Racing Calendar criteriums closed out a full weekend of cycling events in Somerville and were the final tune-up ahead of next weekend’s UCI races in Philadelphia.

Cliff-Ryan, who won the USA Crits SpeedWeek overall earlier in May, outkicked Kristy Broun (Verducci Breakaway) and Brooke Miller (TIBCO-To The Top) in a bunch sprint at the end of the four-corner, 20-mile race. Cliff-Ryan’s win came in front of hometown sponsors in an event the team identified in March as a target.

“With two laps to go, we took over and executed the perfect lead out,” Cliff-Ryan said. “What a great sight to have six of my teammates lined up in front of me! I didn’t want to get boxed in so I laid off Kelly Benjamin and when I heard Brooke Miller coming, I jumped with 200-250 meters to go.”

“I’m super happy to win … and honored to have my name listed as a two-time winner alongside some of the greats of this sport. And while only my name appears as the winner, it was definitely the entire Colavita/Baci team that delivered me to the line,” she said.

On the men’s side, Kersten led a V Australia one-two on the men’s podium, taking a crash-marred bunch sprint ahead of teammate Alessandro Bazzana and Clayton Barrows (AXA Equitable) after 50 miles of racing. Ivan Dominguez (Jamis-Sutter Home) made a bid to win in front of the local sponsors, but crashed 200 meters from the finish.

“This was a team effort,” said Kersten. “Everyone played their roles perfectly and was 100-percent committed to me. It’s a really good feeling when it pays off.”
