Barry might get Tour de France nod

Michael Barry is in the running for the final spot of the Team Sky’s Tour de France team.

The Guardian reported Friday that eight of Team Sky’s nine-man Tour squad is already decided, with Barry, Greg Henderson and Sylvain Calzati bucking for the ninth spot on the British squad.

The veteran Canadian recently completed the Giro d’Italia. Despite numerous appearances in the Giro and Vuelta a España, Barry has never raced the Tour.

There was no official word on the team’s web site, but the newspaper reported that eight of the positions are already confirmed.

Leading the team will be GC threat Bradley Wiggins, who rode to fourth overall last year in a breakout performance with Garmin-Transitions. The Olympic track champion surprised many with his consistency in the big mountains and has a lot of pressure to repeat the performance this year following his controversial transfer to Team Sky in the off-season.

Joining him will be British riders Steve Cummings and Geraint Thomas, Spanish pavé specialist Juan Antonio Flecha, Norwegian sensation Edvald Boasson Hagen and compatriot Kurt-Asle Arvesen, Thomas Lovkvist and Simon Gerrans.

Flecha, Arvesen and Gerrans are all former Tour stage winners while Boasson Hagen will be making his much-anticipated Tour debut.
