Not Rockin’, Pat McCarty jumps to Yahoo Cycling Team

By Phil Heckler

Former European-based pro Pat McCarty, who had announced last fall that he would join Rock Racing for the 2010 season, has signed on with the new Yahoo Cycling Team on a provisional basis. McCarty’s primary team now is the Richardson Bike Mart/Matrix team.

McCarty, 28, has raced for U.S. Postal, Discovery, Phonak and Garmin-Slipstream, and raced for Team OUCH last season. He will race with Yahoo! for the Redlands Bicycle Classic and the Sea Otter Classic, the team said. The deal was reached Friday.

“I would really like to have him full time,” said team general manager Kevin Klein.

McCarty has a two-race release from the Richardson’s team, said Max Miley, that team’s manager.

“We looked at the situation, looked at what was best for (Pat),” Miley said, about releasing McCarty temporarily.

Klein said that while McCarty’s situation with Rock Racing is unfortunate, it’s good for the Yahoo team.

“Pat understands the layout of these races,” Klein said. He said that McCarty would serve as a road captain, as the team will be sending a young crew to the two California races.

Klein said that he hopes to capture the “chess game” element of road racing with McCarty’s years of experience. With Yahoo serving as a development team, hoping for a Continental team license next year, the addition of McCarty could provide guidance and the support for the younger riders.

McCarty and Tony Cruz were both connected with Rock Racing last fall. However, last month the UCI rejected the team’s application for an American Pro Continental license and the team’s future has been uncertain since then ( see related story, “What’s up with Rock Racing?”).
