Bos beats Cav’ in Almería

Former track star Theo Bos (Cervélo TestTeam) scored his biggest win since switching to the road last season with a bunch-sprint victory over Mark Cavendish (HTC-Columbia) in Sunday’s Clásica de Almería in Spain.

Bos out-kicked Cavendish in the 178.2km race in the Dutch rider’s biggest win on the road and his first since switching to Cervélo for 2010. Graeme Brown (Rabobank), runner-up last year behind Greg Henderson, came through third to round out the podium.

Cavendish, meanwhile, is still looking for his first win on the 2010 season. He delayed his start until last week’s Ruta del Sol due to an infected tooth that sidelined him for what had been his projected debut at the Tour of Qatar earlier this month.

A four-rider breakaway opened up a five-minute lead at 75km when HTC-Columbia and Rabobank collaborated to keep things under control.

HTC-Columbia worked to control the race in the closing climbs, chasing down a two-man breakaway attempt in the final 2km to set up Cavendish. Things were looking good for the Cannonball when Bos pulled off the big victory.

Bos, a former track world champion, is expecting bigger things in his second year on the road. Last year was marred by a crash at the Tour of Turkey involving race winner Daryl Impey that later led to a ban for Bos.
