D.C. mayor meets Giro director

Giro d’Italia race director Angelo Zomegnan met Thursday with Washington mayor Adrian Fenty about possibly starting the cycling classic in the U.S. capital in 2012, the New York Times reported Friday.

Fenty did not strike a firm deal for the annual May affair to open in Washington but the meeting was called a success and Mark Sommers, a lawyer heading the group trying to lure the event, said a tentative deal was reached.

“We can’t say it will 100 percent start here but we think that it is very, very possible and we’re moving forward to work together,” Zomegnan told the Times.

“There are a lot of things that must happen in the next few weeks before we can say it’s 100 percent. But I think it looks good.”

Sommers said the deal would see the prologue and first stage of the race conducted entirely within the U.S. capital.

Zomegnan presented Fenty, an avid bicycle rider, with a maglia rosa.

“I believe it would be one of the most fabulous events ever to happen in Washington from an athletic discipline standpoint,” said Fenty, whose grandmother is from the suburbs of Rome.
