Winter Park's First Super-D Attracts Top Riders

Super Downhill racing action burst into the Winter Park Mountain Bike Series in full force on Sunday, with 170 racers ready to try out the inaugural event.

At 5.5 miles in length through a vertical drop of 1,620 feet, the course ran long and tough, testing both endurance and descending skill. Nicolas Enjalbert (Velox/Ellsworth) set the pace on the new course, taking the win in 18 minutes, 32 seconds. The battle for second place was tight, with Jesse Swift (Bikeparts.com/Peak Cycles) in 18:46 edging out teammate Tate Graves by less than a second. Spencer Powlison (Mafia Racing) was fourth in 18:59 and Douglas Schuler (Lenz Sport/BCS/Notubes.com) finished fifth in 19:04.

In the women’s competition, Bobbie Kae Watt (Specialized/Fox/Oakley) took the win in 22:59. Expert racers Maria Pastore (23:25) and Sarah Altschuler (24:17) finished second and third, respectively.

Leading the sport women were Susan Adamkovics (24:53), Liz Hall (24:55), and June Shelp (25:57).

Lucas Perez led the men’s expert category with a time of 19:47. Matt Steinwald was second in 19:58 and Darin Peery took third in 20:05. For the sport riders, it was Chris Madden who was fastest to the finish in 20:31, followed by Cary Dunn in 20:50 and Drew Sprafke in 20:52.
