Revising its original plan to reserve its Record Red Ergopower shifters for professionals, Campagnolo announced Thursday that it will offer a limited run of the special heavy-action shifters to the public.
The pro Ergo levers incorporate stronger springs for a more tactile action. Campagnolo says that the change was made to appease elite riders who use the crisper action to “feel the shifts at the hardest moments of the race.”
Campagnolo plans to offer 600 shifter sets to the public. The pro model shifters will be sold only as part of complete Record groups with the same specifications Campy offers to its pro teams. The groups will come with a 39/53 crankset and 11-23- or 12-25-tooth cassettes.
“Even though the peculiarities of these special Ergopower controls are in clear contrast to what the market has been asking for in recent years (softer and lighter actuating force),” said Francesco Zenere, Campagnolo’s PR manager, via press release. “The demand has been conspicuous. It would in fact appear that some cyclists wish to feel the same sensations that professionals get when they are on their bicycles and want sharper and sonorous shifting.”
The Record groups that include the special Ergopower controls are available now in Italy; expect them stateside by April 20. The price will remain the same as a standard Record group.
